When someone passes away

What to do in Greater Austin, step by step. Read it once now, so you know where it is. Please call a friend from the community too; nobody should do this alone.

The first two calls

  • 911If the death was sudden or unexpected, or nobody was with them
  • (512) 666-3389ICGA Muslim Cemetery line, in daylight hours. A volunteer answers.

The cemetery’s website says to call “during daylight and business hours”. It does not list set hours or an after-hours number. At night, you can fill in the online Burial Intake Form first. The cemetery says that after the form, it will contact you about the next steps. Checked 24 Oct 2026 on icgamuslimcemetery.org (home, Burial and Contact pages) and its Usage Agreement (revised July 2025).

Step by step

  1. If the death was sudden or unexpected

Call 911. In Travis County, the Medical Examiner looks into sudden, unexpected or unnatural deaths. If the Medical Examiner is involved, tell the cemetery line when you call, so they can plan with you.

    Travis County Medical Examiner, 7723 Springdale Rd, Austin 78724 · (512) 854-9599 · traviscountytx.gov/medical-examiner. Checked 24 Oct 2026 on traviscountytx.gov.

  2. Call the ICGA Muslim Cemetery line

In daylight hours, call (512) 666-3389. A volunteer answers, and the ICGA funeral coordinator guides you from here. The cemetery’s website says to call “during daylight and business hours”. It does not list set hours or an after-hours number. At night, you can fill in the online Burial Intake Form first. The cemetery says that after the form, it will contact you about the next steps.

Who can be buried there: The cemetery’s rules say it is “reserved for residents of the Central Texas Region”. Its Usage Agreement (revised July 2025) says burial there is for Muslims of “Ahl-as-sunnah wal-jamaah”. The website does not say which towns count as Central Texas, so ask the cemetery line before you make plans, especially if the person lived outside Greater Austin.

The cemetery's agreement says its volunteers can help you work with a licensed funeral home and with the religious preparations. Also tell your masjid: NAMCC, for example, says its imam helps families with the arrangements and paperwork.

  3. Fill in the cemetery's forms

The cemetery asks the family to:

Have ready: the full name, Social Security number (if they had one), place of birth and place of death.

The family member in charge signs the Usage Agreement. It also has the cemetery's rules for the burial and for people who come to the cemetery, for example about dress, and that women who come stay under the shed. Please read it before the day.

  4. Ghusl, kafan, janazah and burial

In the Austin area, the cemetery's usual place for ghusl and janazah is the ICGA masjid at 5110 Manor Rd. Trained ICGA volunteers do the ghusl and kafan; family members can join if they ask in advance. The next of kin must meet a cemetery representative in person at least one hour before the washing, to finish the paperwork and the costs. After Salat al-Janazah, burial is at the Austin Muslim Cemetery, 1920 County Line Rd, Dale TX 78616, about 30 miles from Austin.

Cost: The cemetery says the land is free for Muslims because it is waqf, the name plaque is covered, and ICGA charges no fee for ghusl, kafan or janazah. The family pays the grave digger, a third party, directly; the amount is not published, so ask the cemetery line. The Burial page adds that a donation to the cemetery fund is appreciated. If the cost is hard for your family, the cemetery says to contact them, and you can tell us too.

  5. Death certificates

You will need several certified copies for banks, insurance and other paperwork.

    • Death inside Austin city limits: City of Austin Office of Vital Records, 7201 Levander Loop, Building C, Austin 78702. Mon–Fri 8 am – 4:30 pm (walk-ins until 4:15). 512-972-4784. On 24 Oct 2026 the fee was $21 for the first copy and $4 for each extra copy ordered at the same time. The City says certificates are usually ready about two weeks after the death. • Outside Austin city limits (Round Rock, Pflugerville, Kyle, Bee Cave and others): the City of Austin does not register these. Order from Texas Vital Statistics, or ask the local registrar or county clerk. 888-963-7111. Texas DSHS: death records

  6. If the person was an Indonesian citizen

Tell KJRI Houston, the Indonesian consulate for Texas. If the family wants to bring the body home to Indonesia (pemulangan jenazah), ask KJRI first what they need; we could not find their current requirements published, so we do not list them here.

    KJRI Houston · (713) 785-1691 (service hours 09.30–13.00) · consular@indonesiahouston.net. Checked 24 Oct 2026 on kemlu.go.id/houston.

  7. After the burial

Grief takes time. Lean on your masjid and your friends. NAMCC says it can refer families to a grief counselor, and Integral Care (512-472-4357) helps anyone in Travis County who is struggling.

Visiting the grave: the cemetery's agreement says it is open in daylight hours through a turnstile gate; the car gate stays locked.

IMATX volunteers can help with meals, rides and errands, and with a fundraiser for the family when it is needed. Just ask.
